Lots of potential den sites
Incredibly remote terrain but perfect for wildcats
Not for the faint hearted.
Hi All
Thanks so much for all the thousands of comments, emails, likes and shares of the beautiful kittens and their wonderful mother. As many of you have said, they make your hearts sing, as they do ours. They are both doing extremely well and we will post up more footage very shortly.
In the meantime, we wanted to share with you a very exciting development for our project. We mentioned previously that we were working with some community members on the West coast of Scotland who had sighting reports. We are hoping to establish if there is a new previously unknown population there. Well, we now have a team of highly experienced field workers and mountaineers searching far and wide. They are operating across a vast area: East of Oban and between Dunoon and Loch Lomond. The area contains extremely remota and high-quality wildcat habitat.
The team led by Robert and Alistair have been surveying the vast forests and they have seen potential wildcats now on drones on 3 separate occasions. The areas are so remote that hybridisation with domestic cats is very unlikely, so we are extremely hopeful that they will be very high scoring wildcats.
We supplied Robert and Alistair with trail cameras and they now have the task of getting these felines on camera. They have GPS marked the drone sightings and now have 8 cameras set in the area and we have just sent them another 4 cameras. This is a serious undertaking and some of the sites are accessible only by abseiling down cliffs into ravines. It is exhilarating work that Robert and Alistair are undertaking with great vigour (see pics)
We hope to be able to show you wildcat footage in this wildcat area very soon. We are all really excited about this.
Our project continues to expand and we are determined to find each and every wildcat so that it can be protected in the wild where it belongs.
Finding wildcats in the wild is hard, but so rewarding and it is because of wonderfully dedicated people like Robert and Alistair that we can operate over such vast areas. We now have monitoring taking place in Sutherland, the Angus Glens, Aberdeenshire, Argyll and Bute and West Lochaber. It is truly a national effort.
If you want to support our project so that we can continue to resource local communities and expand our work, then you can do so at this link:

So many more updates to follow so please keep watching.
Many thanks as always
Emily and an ever increasing Wildcat Haven Team.
