KITTEN FOOTAGE AND A HUGE YEAR AHEAD
Happy New Year to each and every one of you.
We hope you had a peaceful festive period. Despite the Christmas break it has been a busy time for us, as this is a great time for monitoring work. The snow cover allows us to find potential wildcat tracks and identify both new and key habitat areas. Our teams have been out setting cameras throughout the Christmas period and we will be checking them soon, so fingers crossed.
There is a huge year ahead of us. This is the year when we truly hope and believe that we will stop the madness at the Clashindarroch and that the wildcats there get the peace they rightfully deserve. A full legal update is coming soon.
This is also the year when we will launch out most ambitious project ever, that will be a fundamental step in saving the Scottish wildcat in the wild where it belongs. We are busy getting everything ready and will announce it in the very near future. Very exciting times ahead.
As most of you will know, we were all privileged to see the wonderful Eve successfully rear her two kittens. We followed the whole process from her pregnancy to the kittens becoming sub adults. We are delighted to say that the kittens are now fully independent and they look in fantastic condition.
This is a video of one them and you will see by the date stamp that it was on Christmas eve. Very apt. This kitten is female and has set up a territory in an area of forest adjacent to Eve’s. She is clearly very happy and proud in her new territory as she is territory marking with vigour, rubbing her scent all over a scratching branch. This is how wildcats set territory boundaries just like tigers.
As you can see, she is in fantastic condition with great body mass cover and that incredibly thick and weatherproof wildcat coat. Her markings are developing beautifully. Look at those distinct body stripes and that thick, blunt, ringed tail with no tapering at all. A classic wildcat indicator. Even though she is now a sub adult she still has that kitten like face. We hope you agree that she is simply stunning😻.
